The current king of the Mountain, the Mercedes AMG GT3 has been the dominant car of the last several Repco Bathurst 12 Hour races. Powered by a powerful, normally aspirated 6.2 litre V8 engine mounted in front of the driver, the AMG GT3 replaced the highly successful SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’ that won the 12-Hour in 2013.
Statistically the most successful GT3 car in history, and certainly one of the most mass-produced, Audi’s venerable R8 GT3 remains one of the fastest cars around. Powered by a mid-mounted 5.0 litre V10 engine, the R8 has claimed three Bathurst wins – twice with the first-generation car and once with the current specification entry. An unrestricted R8 also remains the quickest ever car to lap Mount Panorama, in the hands of two-time 12 Hour winner, Chris Mies.
A wholesale change from the previous generation car, Porsche’s 992 GT3R continues the brands presence in all levels of GT racing. Powered by a 4.0 litre flat six – normally aspirated as usual – sitting behind the rear axle the 911 GT3R in previous generations has been hugely successful on the Mountain, including winning the race in 2019 and scoring pole position in 2020.
The latest Evolution of Lamborghini’s GT3 machine was developed in-house at the Italian factory and proves another step forward from the existing first-gen Huracan. Sharing similar underpinnings to the Audi – technically a distant cousin of the Lambo – the mid-mounted V10 is matched with huge aero and swathes of Carbon Fibre to create a front-running GT3 contender.
