admin ACTOR Eric Bana’s hopes of a top result in the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour race ended spectacularly when his car was destroyed in a heavy crash at Mount Panorama today.
Bana’s co-driver Peter Hill was at the wheel of the Globe/Westrac Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10 when it stopped with an unknown problem on the climb out of the Cutting and was hit soon after by a Subaru Impreza driven by rally champion Dean Herridge.
The crash happened at 2.30 pm on lap 130, after eight hours of racing, when the Bana/Hill/Tim Leahy car was in fifth place.
The safety car was called out for the sixth time and the race stopped while the wreckage was removed and track cleaned.
At the time, Des Wall was leading the race from 2008/2009 winner Rod Salmon – both in Mitsubishis – with John Bowe third in a BMW.
Earlier, the race also was stopped for 40 minutes when a large tree fell across the track at the top of Conrod Straight. No car was hit by the falling tree and emergency crews removed it chainsaws, a crane and a truck.
A total of 42 cars (correct) started at 6.30 am and face a journey of up to around 1500 kilometres, depending on the pace dictated by weather. The Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour, in its fourth year as the ultimate test of showroom-standard production cars, is Australia’s longest motor race.

Hi, Thanks Peter for the crash into my flag point. The screech of tyres to find you sliding into my wall only feet way was not only breathtaking, but made the day interesting. All the best for 2011 Perter and Eric !
Hi Chcistian, yes it was a great crash, did you see both crashes or just the one in front of you, i have all the photos from both crashes.
It is funny how in the interview how the driver said that the car just stopped with a unknown problem, lucky that i have the photos to show the problem, you look great in them.
