The on-track action for the 2017 Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour is officially underway, with opening practice sessions providing an opportunity for all racers to take to the Mountain this morning.
The #88 Maranello Motorsport Ferrari 488 GT3 of Tony Vilander, Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup is currently the fastest of the field and the Liqui-Moly GT3 Pro-Pro class, with Vilander topping the sheets during practice two (all drivers) with a 2m 04.192s lap.
Second fastest outright was the #60 BMW Team SRM BMW M6 GT3, while the #75 and #74 Jamec Pem Racing Audi R8 LMSs were third and fourth fastest respectively. Rounding out the top five was the #23 Nissan Motorsport Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3.
Leading the classes were the #5 GT Motorsport Pty Ltd Audi R8 LMS (2m 06.170s – Rydges Bathurst GT3 AM), the #11 Objective Racing McLaren 650s (2m 05.906s – BRM Watches GT3 Pro-AM), the #4 Grove Motorsport Porsche 911 (2m 10.672s – myPlates GT3 Class B), the #55 RA Motorsports Ginetta G55 (2m 20.487s – Class C- GT4) and the #65 Daytona Sportscars Dodge Viper Coupe (2m 10.713s – Racer Industries Class I). The #65 also impressed when it came to speed – clocking up 297.6kmh through the speed trap in the closing stages of the session with Jamie Augustine at the wheel.
The sessions weren’t without their drama. Three cars (#62, #65 and #76) were held back from beginning practice one for not completing required administrative process ahead of the first practice session (amateurs only), and a red flag was flown in the first ten minutes of the all drivers session for the limping #60 BMW Team SRM BMW M6 GT3 with Steven Richards at the wheel. When the green flags flew, 40 minutes remained in the session.
In the Amateur Only session earlier in the morning, it was Russell Ingall who topped the time sheets outright and in the Liqui-Moly GT3 Pro-Pro class in the #7 Team Castrol Vodafone BMW M6 GT3 with a 2m 06.439s lap. For the other classes, it was the #3 Team ASR Pty Ltd Audi R8 LMS (BRM Watches GT3 Pro-AM), the #35 Miedecke Stone Motorsport Aston Martin V12 Vantage (Rydges Bathurst GT3 AM), the #4 Grove Motorsport Porsche 911 (myPlates GT3 Class B), the #19 PROsport Performance Porsche Cayman PRO 4 (Class C GT4) and the #65 Daytona Sportscars Dodge Viper Coupe (Racer Industries Class I) who found themselves on top of the category orders.
